thoughts
Well I definitely had an interesting class today that really challenged me. I'm taking a class called Theology and Youth Culture with Dr. Case. In the class currently we are talking about the effect media has on our students and how they think about and analyze it. Its seems tho that ever single class turns into a debate about the right way to do ministry...either big church or small church.
I seem to be the only one in the class that goes to or is willing to defend "mega church". Its kinda hard to sit in a class and have people say that lights and sound are just a gimic to get people in the door. It makes me ask if it is...but at the same time when you have 3 thousand people you can't fly with an acoustic guitar with no amp and no amplified speaking voice its just impossible. It doesn't help that I am a techie so of course I think its vital...haha.
The class has really challenged me to think about the motives that "big church" uses but heres the thing: I believe in what we are doing. I believe that big church works. I think big church has problems but so does little church. The politics in little church can cripple pastors just as easily in little church as it can in big church, and thats just one example.
A friend of mine wrote in his blog about what is like to be behind the scenes. I guess that effects my view. I have trouble defending big church sometimes because of stuff that happens behind the scenes but at the same time I want to say how people in big church are really taking the call to give the message of Christ to as many people as possible and love doing it and really care about students.
I think the Hub's mission statement is something like "helping as many students as possible wholeheatedly know the love of Christ." The great commission calls us to spread the love of Christ. I don't think we are doing something wrong. Is it better to have 8 core kids or 300 kids learning about Christ. I DON'T KNOW. I don't have the answers I search for.
So thats my unresolved thought on the class today. If that doesn't make sense I'm sorry I have a head cold that is making coherent thoughts hard to come by.
A song Dr. Case mentioned in class referring to the death of pastors that have pretend to have it all together. I don't claim to know exactly how it relates..maybe someone else does.
do you worry that you're not liked
how long till you break
you're happy cause you smile
but how much can you fake
an ordinary boy an ordinary name
but ordinary's just not good enough today
alone I'm thinking
why is superman dead
is it in my head
we'll just laugh instead
you worry about the weather and
whether or not you should hate
are you worried about your faith
kneel down and obey
you're happy you're in love
you need someone to hate
an ordinary girl an ordinary waist
but ordinary's just not good enough today
doesn't anybody ever know that the
world's a subway...

the OLP song: ordinary is not good enough, i.e. ordinary church, some people need lights and sound to keep there attention. I agree that all methods have thier flaws. That's just it, there is no right way. the small church must exist for those who need the small church. The big church must exist for those who need the big church. The church in Acts "added to there number daily by the thousands" and also was made up of small "house churches." small churches use lights and sound. there are big churches that don't(theres one in Africa with tens of thousands, no sound system). Both can be effective, if done with a God heart. Lastly, judge them by thier fruits. A small church that doesn't grow in some way (numbers, spiritually, church planting) is doing something wrong. A big church that is misguiding people, well...
p.s., from what i've encountered, Hamburg Weslyan has good fruits.

Good post, Roommate. Sounds like an interesting class. I'd write something more profound but the cheap NyQuil is kicking in and I'm in a "fog"...I'm sure you know what that's like...haha. Perhaps I'll re-comment when I'm more "with it."
